    Be hideous,

    be absolutely disgusting.

I am not interested in depicting the conventional beauty, my love resides in the macabre, the uglyness, the rot and the sodomy. I want to infest the most holy depictions inside my culture with hideousness, transforming them into a parasite that will only belong to the monstrous taboos in mexican society.

the shades are deprived of even the semblance of the human form

    B&W photographic print

    12 x 18 in (unframed)

    Price TBD

“the shades are deprived of even the semblance of the human form”

As part of a body of work titled “images of the Inferno: exploration of the Woods of Suicide and the foliage of Purgatory”
. There is said to be a circle in Hell meant for “those who commit violence against themselves”. Souls lost in life and death; damned for eternity to suffer as they did in life.

In reflection of the symbolism found in Dante’s Divine Comedy, a shade listlessly wanders in dead woods frozen in time. They pace in the desolation of shadows bent believed neither to have found peace in life nor death. All semblance of their form has been overtaken by the darkness of their spirit which led the soul to succumb to this fate. Yet this realm is vast and still without the passing of time, perhaps offering fleeting solitude.
Confronting both the relief and dread of eternal lonesome, this work further explores mental health, existential dread, fears of consequence in the afterlife, spiritual iconography and the dark elements of the spirit. The piece finds resonance in the somber, silent echoes of souls adrift.

I have a strange relationship with dark-spirited art and culture. My work, similar to my mind, shifts from light to dark. I have been particularly sensitive to gothic/dark works my entire life. As a child, I was horrified and repelled by any aspect of it, but dark and gothic works had a strange pull on me; and I couldn't help but explore it. Upon first glance, you would think I have no attraction to the gothic. I am not one to openly express my pull toward it, but you will see it come out in some of my art, sometimes in my jewelry, or if you join me to chit chat with a cup of tea.

  • Noctife

    (they/them)

    Unfettered

oils & wax on wooden canvas

    8’’ x 6’’

    Original $325

I'm Noctife, an artist based in the Midwest currently exploring pieces in my ongoing series "Visions from the Void".

Art is very spiritually intimate to me, and I was introduced to this flow of self by my grandfather, whom I looked up to dearly. Over the years I came to dabble in multimedia experiments, but have only recently begun fully diving into this realm of expression again.

Although chaotic, I was able to reach the goal I had set for myself of pursuing this path on New Year’s of 2022. By January 2023, I had been accepted to show my art at a local event. Since then, I’d been to 5 art markets where I was anxiously excited to share my work, and have my art displayed and sold at 3 separate locations in Lafayette, IN.

To share this aspect of myself is terrifying, but I’ve enjoyed being able to bond with others over my paintings’ intimate subjects. My work has allowed me to explore these visceral spaces with others. It allows for an immediately intimate experience, to see so deeply into another person and to both empathize with each other over our individual and collective wounds. Knowing that others can identify with what I create has acted as a fuel for my desire to continue down this path.

Through my work I hope to evoke a sense of wonder and contemplativeness about our place in the universe, the energies we express and indulge in, and our relationships to the self & to others. Some works are paired with poetry previously written which helps to embody the intimate emotions I've lain upon the canvas. Darker corners of my experiences do play a heavier role in my art. Through expressing these topics and emotions, I hope to shine a light on how different grievances affect people, and how gruesome the healing process can be. With this, I hope to spark discussions about mental health, breaches of trust or boundaries, and how catharsis is intimate, visceral, and freeing.

Outside of being an artist, I am also a botanist and a musician. I majored with a bachelors in Botany at Purdue University. I was on my way to double majoring in Painting, but a job offer convinced me to focus on graduating soon. Which was, unfortunately, without my degree in Painting. I have thought about going back, but have enjoyed the journey of diving into this of my own volition and learning so much from others in the art community along the way.

My preferred mediums are oils, but I also work with acrylics on canvas or wood. Inspiration for my name came from the root meaning of "Veneris" (Venus in latin) and this is some of the energy I wanted to exonerate in my imagery. The name Noctife is a play on the Latin word for evening-star, which is synonymous with Venus.

My name is Roxy Gonzalez, I'm an artist from El Paso, Texas who received a BFA in drawing and printmaking. My art is influenced by the way life and death interact with us on a daily basis. What happens when we come to the realization that we have taken life for granted and must inevitably grieve the death of our loved ones, our hopes, our thoughts? I attempt to convey these ideas through the form of lithography and graphite drawings so that the

audience can also feel the range of emotions we experience as humans.

I also take inspiration from classic artists such as Caravaggio, Evelyn De Morgan and Joseph Noel Paton. I have always been drawn to the beauty in darkness and like to create pieces that juxtapose beautiful classical art styles with dark twists.

    Religious Tales of The Macabre

    Fine liner and digital editing

    11”x17”

    £100-£200

I would consider myself a multi-media artist that

focuses on all aspects of art and design. Based in the

North East of England, I currently study at

Sunderland College where I am working towards my

degree in Art. Throughout my life, I have always been

interested in the world of art due to my upbringing in

a family full of art lovers.

Over the years, my skills have developed far beyond

I expected, and I have created pieces on scales I

never imagined. Working alongside freelance artist,

Sara Blackburn was a huge accomplishment in my

artistic career. This experience allowed me to see

first hand into the life of being an artist and helped

solidify my career ideas of being an artist myself.

My art preference is surrealism, which transmits the

thoughts of the viewer in a mysterious way, while

also combining aspects of realism, creating an

uncanny effect. Most of my work is inspired by the

Renaissance period; However, with my work i add a

dark aspect to my pieces. With Dark Renaissance

and Religion being my main focus, my work can be

seen as controversial to some. However, with my

style and desires to be a tattoo artist, i hope to reach

out to a specific target audience in which i combine

the beauties of Dark Art and the Renaissance.

Derived from memory, my work makes space for a topic that has no room in everyday conversation. Imbued with catharsis and criticism, the setting is defined by windowless interior spaces, patterned tile floors, and empty walls. The paintings manifest as self-portraits that live in the realm of taboo and wallow in cynicism; often underlined by secondary scenes or breaks from the verisimilitude of the primary image.

I find that certain experiences from within psychiatric hospitals come to mind at unlikely times–walking on the bathroom tile wearing socks, touching a fabric that feels reminiscent of a hospital gown, entering a room with fluorescent lighting. Re-creating and re-interpreting these memories on low quality, torn canvas satisfies a need I feel to purge obsessive and defeatist ruminations. Though I often employ drawing techniques, oil paint combined with the occasional use of other media best serve this painting series. The materiality of oil paint at this approximately life-size scale lends the work to the realness and ethereality that I seek to convey the re-imagined, emotional memories.

My practice is a channel for grief and an outlet for the voices of my reality and history that yearn to have a place in the world. Repeated and excessive hospital stays at the highest level of mental healthcare may not be a common experience, but I have to believe that to some degree the work speaks to more universal experiences of isolation, transition, and woe. Beyond that, I hope that my work speaks to the profound and many-faceted pools of reality existing within every human. I do not shy away from the messiness and confusion; I do not feel a need to make sense of the pieces. There is usually no purpose to be found.
