Gothe Residency of the Arts (GROTA) is a forthcoming, private artist residency to be based* in Scotland, UK, founded and hosted by Vincent Gothe. More than just a residency, GROTA is recognized for its international creative community and its dedication to fostering unique opportunities for ‘dark-spirited’ and alternative artists.
"Envision a creative sanctuary—a home enchanted by the arts, made warm and welcoming by the found family and hospitable staff therein. A place where inspiration flows freely and creative expression is woven into the very nature of the manor itself. There, every moment fuel to the next brushstroke and every word the wake of a poem—weaving art and joy into the hearts of every soul who steps inside." - Vincent Gothe, Founder and Host of GROTA
About The Residency
How is Gothe Residency of the Arts different from a traditional artist residency programme?
“One must first understand when looking into GROTA that it is not a traditional artist residency programme. I would define Gothe Residency of the Arts first and foremost as my home: a dark, elegant manor curated by an artist for artists. This is not another pay-to-win retreat with a twist—and certainly not another asphyxiating institutional dormitory for an artist to seal themselves away to for a few months of the year. GROTA is an opportunity for artists of this century to immerse themselves into something truly unique. It is both the canvas and a muse; a place where creation and creator become indistinguishable and art is not merely made, but lived.”

An Artist Residency is a physical place involving a temporary stay in a designated location where artists are invited to live and work outside of their typical environments. For the duration of their stay, artists are provided the resources and space to reflect, research, explore new avenues, and most importantly: create.
Overall, the right Artist Residency can be a transformative, inspirational experience that revitalizes the creative spirit. The size, duration, location, cost, and emphasis of an artist residency can vary significantly from one to another—and this is where Gothe Residency of the Arts distinguishes itself.
-
As a private artist residency programme to be hosted from someone’s home, trust and safety are paramount—thus, Vincent Gothe has designed GROTA to host artists engaged in our community in some way: whether through our ongoing programmes, Community Arts Discord, visionary projects, publications, exhibitions, or otherwise.
When renovations near completion (est. Late 2026/Early 2027*), applications will open first (and no less than six months in advance) to those on our Waitlist (longstanding Legacy Patrons, and then Postcard & Penpal Patrons).
Among those noted above, GROTA welcomes artists of all creative disciplines, backgrounds, and career stages who resonate with the residencies values to consider applying.
Applications will be open internationally to creators 18+ and of all genders, sexual orientations, and ethnic and spiritual backgrounds.

Alongside Vincent Gothe, our dedicated professional and founding visionary staff will be actively involved in the day-to-day logistics and management of the estate, ensuring a seamless experience for all residents.
“Gothe Residency of the Arts is not merely about providing artists with the time, space, and resources they need to work but about ensuring residents can be free from external stressors that impede their creative process through their stay. To be hosted with care and to exist in an environment of utmost intention and hospitality—this is what I believe will allow the residents of GROTA to immerse themselves fully in their creative process.” —Vincent Gothe, Envisions Magazine Page 42

While many residencies must charge participants to cover operational costs and ensure programme sustainability, Vincent Gothe hopes GROTA can follow a different path—one built on the collective support of GROTA’s community, private donors, patrons, and supporting art and culture institutions.
“I have struggled firsthand with the financial strains that so many early and mid-career artists face, and through this, I empathize deeply with those who feel excluded from the opportunities traditional artist residencies provide.[…]Regardless of private funding and Patreon’s success through the years, my commitment remains the same: to keep residency fees at the lowest possible operational cost for my guests.[…]
Once a physical location is established and renovations and furnishings are complete, GROTA is designed to sustain much of the manor’s anticipated monthly expenses through the utilization of its in-house studios, creative services, merchandise sales, and event fundraiser revenue. Though Vincent cannot ensure this would generate enough revenue to cover the complete expenses associated with hosting residents and sponsoring their projects, it would, at the very least, enable him host a few guests at a time.

Vincent understands some prospective residents like to prepare in advance, and thus provides the following general application requirements for consideration:
⬥General Demographics (name, pronouns, contact info)
⬥Portfolio (social media, website, or samples of work)
⬥A short description of the applicants past and or present involvements with GROTA/ Notable experiences through GROTA
⬥Vision Statement (project plans, artist statement, desired engagements)
⬥A series of written interview questions (see Selection Criteria below for more info)
⬥A list of supplies needed & studio requirements
⬥CV (or equivalent)
⬥Accommodations (accessibility needs, dietary restrictions, service animals, sensory concerns, roommate requests, etc.)
Selection Criteria:
Applications will be reviewed by Vincent Gothe, alongside coordinating visionaries and guest artist staff. Selections will be made in accordance with the criteria outlined above. Much like our W.E.B. Penpal Program pairing application, the Residency Application will include a series of thoughtful questions designed to help our team understand each applicant’s artistic nature, vision, and needs. This process allows us to curate a cohort of artists who are likely to inspire, challenge, and grow alongside one another—ensuring that each term remains aligned with GROTA’s core values.
-
Vincent Gothe plans to host multiple 2-, 4-, and 8-week residency terms throughout the year. Several terms will likely be open for application simultaneously, giving applicants the opportunity to apply for the consideration of multiple terms at once. Legacy patrons will also be considered for consecutive, extended terms.
Each term will accommodate a small cohort of 5–6 residents, ensuring a personalized and focused environment, allowing each artist the space needed for their creative pursuits.
-
No, not at all! If you later apply to our residency, we will assume you are interested in the unique experiences and aesthetics we promise to offer in alignment with our core values. Your exact artistic, aesthetic, and stylistic preferences will be inherently understood as unique to you. GROTA is not in place to define or limit what goth or any other dark-based subculture entails. ‘’Gothe’’ is simply the last name and sentiment of Gothe Residency of the Art’s founder, Vincent Gothe.

"—this was undoubtedly a place designed to serve dark artists. It was clear that each detail of every resident's arrival had been considered with utmost care. It was this realization that completely dispelled the self-doubt I harbored about my place in such a setting.”
