GROTA VISIONS — TUCSON,AZ

GROTA VISIONS: A Fundraising Celebration of the Dark Arts

was a landmark event that marked a significant milestone for the Gothe Residency of the Arts (GROTA). This gallery and vending event was a unique collaboration between Groundworks, The Gothic Creatives Collective, and Gothe Residency of the Arts, and was held at the Groundworks venue at 2919 E Grant Rd, Tucson, AZ.

The gallery space brought together over 50 dark-spirited artists from around the world, showcasing a rich tapestry of dark creativity across many different artistic mediums; including traditional, digital, and 3D art.

The opening artist reception, held on the evening of November 17th, served as a vibrant showcase of our gallery collection and residency vision. The event was accented with exquisite artwork, dark-spirited vendors, the distinctive and exquisite sounds of Lazer Throne and Lacrimorta, on-site tattooing, and more!

While the fundraising outcomes of the event were modest, the true success lay in the connections forged within the dark arts community and the platform we were able to create for artists to share and market their work.

These connections represented the vibrant potential and future opportunities that GROTA envisions.

For more information about the venue that hosted this event and their mission, please visit Groundworks' Website.

    Welcome to the Manor

    Digital

The outpouring of love and support I have received for @gotheresidencyofthearts , coupled with the blossoming community emerging in its shadow, has profoundly transformed my world. The dedication of my visionary team working behind the scenes, alongside the found family of dark artists developing within our Community Discord, has brought a sense of affirmation and joy to my world that is nearly ineffable.

Hosting an Artist residency for dark spirited artists has been a vision I’ve held close to my heart for years. Witnessing the remarkable progress we’ve achieved together in just a few months towards realizing this dream has been truly extraordinary.

Thank you from the depths of my heart and soul for your love and support for GROTA.

I am confident that in time all will grow into place, and I will be there at the Manor door to greet artists from around the world into my loving home for dark-spirited artists. Until then, I shall be growing myself to become the best Host (Or ‘’Count’’, as our loving community has come to call me) I can possibly be.

    With utmost love and gratitude,

    Klaus Vincent Gothe

    Welcome to GROTA

    Digital

My name is Vincent Gothe and I am the prospective host and founder of “Gothe Residency of the Arts’’.

I am a dark spirited illustrator, arts and poetry instructor, and graveyard shift museum attendant who has dedicated my life to the arts. I am driven by the philosophy of art as a means of alchemy (the practice of transforming raw experience into visual or instrumental triumph); art as a compulsion, a lifestyle, and a deeply personal process unique to each and every human experience.

As a graduate illustrator and teacher specializing in helping young artists develop their artistic voice, I have witnessed firsthand the tragic lack of creative spaces tailored to the dark-spirited creators of the world. For the past several years I have been devoutly working towards designing an artist residency program that may offer artists the opportunity to explore the innermost depths of their soul without fear of judgment or criticism—a place that would also offer unique opportunities to network, collaborate, market, mentor, and more.

On January 1st, 2023 I began to assemble a team of founding visionaries whose dark creative spirit and vision united with my own to bring Gothe Residency of the Arts to life. My driving belief was that uniting the individual dreams of artists was sure to wake a grandeur, and most assured reality.

Through GROTA, I pledge to offer my expanding resources as a host and eternal passion for the arts towards fostering a community of dark spirited artists. For years, the Gothe Residency of the Arts has been the beacon of my aspirations, a dream nurtured with passion and hope. It brings me immense joy to share that this dream is now on the cusp of becoming a tangible reality—all thanks to the support from GROTAs beloved community.

This illustration was one of the first made during the initial conceptual phases of GROTA. Fervent thanks to @skeletonhands.poetry for letting me draw him for this piece. It was a delightful challenge to capture his poetic nature in the context of GROTA, for the occasion. His poetry, and artful vision of the wonder awaiting dark spirits at the residency (in every corner) has inspired GROTAs becoming deeply.

    GROTA Symbols

    Digital

I am very happy to finally show you my personal contribution made for the GROTA (Gothe residency of the arts) project founded by @vincentgothe. He brought myself and our founding visionaries together (each of us embodying an element of the dark creative spirit the residency hopes to foster) to explore one or more of the four symbols chosen to represent GROTA: the borzoi, the unicorn, the ouroboros and the spider's web.

This is my interpretation and I decided to create a single work with all the four symbols. The borzoi in the center as an emblem of the spirit of the residence together with the unicorns, symbol of the residents.

The ouroboros, symbol of the cyclical nature, and unity of all things: the spirit of the residence and the symbol of the residents both as an abstract idea and as a concrete reality that can last forever. The spider's web,

a symbol of interconnection, runs alongside all the work, reminding us that our drive to create and connect is what led us to want to circumscribe an artistic space made just for us.

Hallows Eve at the Manor - How do you envision yourself at GROTA?

    Digital

I've daydreamed about my future in GROTA far more often than I'd like to admit. One of these many visions would be enjoying a cozy and warm Halloween with my pet cat, Dorian Wilde, and his friend, Octavian. We would be huddled over next to the fireplace as I plan my next piece and Dorian would be purring contently on my lap🍁🐾

I also envision myself fully reaching my potential as an illustrator whilst experimenting with other mediums as well. I imagine myself looking over a balcony as silvery moonlight graces my hair; and I get to sigh knowing that I'm finally free.

Being at GROTA won't solve all my problems, but the thought of being there with other open-minded dark spirited artists makes them feel worth solving.

I am Vic White (they/them), a multi-media artist currently based in Charlottesville, VA. I recently graduated in 2023 as a first-generation, low-income student from the University of Virginia with degrees in Studio Art and Kinesiology. My recent body of work delves into the multifaceted relationship between self-identity, gender, and the societal constructs imposed upon us during our formative years. My art is a reflection of my ongoing journey as a non-binary person to both rebel against and reconcile my own experiences with the stringent imposition of femininity during childhood. Central to this exploration is the recurring motif of dolls. These ubiquitous childhood symbols have long served as instruments of socialization, specifically in relation to heteronormative and patriarchal macrostructures. In my work, I utilize doll imagery as a canvas for deconstruction, transformation, and empowerment. Through various mediums and techniques, I aim to dismantle the conventional notions of femininity that dolls represent. I reimagine these figures with a bold, unapologetic energy.

I have always loved dreams and the spirit world, in which I find inspiration for my artwork. I describe my aesthetic as rainbow goth, and I love working with vibrant, beautiful colors to transform my artwork into dreamscapes.

I am Ella Hui (she/her), an art student.

I make a lot of mixed media artwork, most of it is digital collage.

My artwork usually is inspired by my daily life, such as the texture of anything. I like to use the texture photos I took into my collage artwork, because it can always bring a sense of uniqueness to every artwork.

To me, art is a tool to help me tell stories. With the right way to create the artwork, which is to make sure the medium I choose is fitting to tell the story. You can let a lot of people understand your feelings emotionally. Art does more than words, there’s some feelings that we will never be able to describe in words. But in Art, we can.

And that is the main reason why I enjoy creating art and appreciate art.

I always feel like the city looks like our memory. Our memories are like a city in our mind, imagine how many memories we have since we were born. They must seem like a city! This beautiful city is the reason why we have different personalities and make different decisions.

The city may look different in everyone’s mind, but mine looks like a church-like city.

I hope through looking at this artwork, the audience can have a reflection about how precious and unique their memories are no matter good or bad. Your memories made who you are.

As a child, I read way too many fantasy books, and always enjoyed the themes of magic and unreality, alongside illustrations of creatures, castles, and intricate frames. As an adult artist, this love of fantastical elements has evolved into an affinity for historical art movements with many converging elements and an almost overwhelming sense of detail. I am a maximalist at heart, the combination of so much fine detail into an overall elegant composition is, for me, a wonderful aesthetic achievement, and something I try to emulate in my own work. This combines easily with my love for drawing organic forms, natural elements, fantastical creatures, and high contrast as well. I particularly enjoy contrasting flowing organic flora and fauna to the more rigid man-made designs of architectural forms. Some of my favorite inspirations for my work come from classic “fairytale” styles like European Gothic Architecture, the era of Art Nouveau, international elements of the art of scrollwork, and artists like William Morris.

My drawings on paper hone in on the feelings of loneliness in human nature. Often, there are little to no features in the background, so the figure is not only alone, but in isolation. The stark darks and lights separate the figure from its otherworldly surroundings, as it’s staring right at you. The use of charcoal allows the darkest of black to engulf the lights, like there’s no air left to breathe. The large scale and mid sized acrylic paintings on canvas depict intricate human forms in complex positions with extreme angels. The settings are surreal dreamscapes, eerie locations, and confined interiors. I use saturated monochromatic color palettes to reflect specific expressions and constraints.

Horror movie tropes have stuck with me since I can remember, after my sister’s suicide the world became a horror movie and the psychological trauma has been reflected in my current body of work. All people experience forms of psychological pain, and viewing contorted human forms can be a catharsis of the shared experience. Dark imagery that expresses psychological pain forces the viewer to be uncomfortable and pitiful of the scene in front of them. Creepy, scary, intense or uncomfortable can be descriptors to the work as people settle in with or view emotional anguish.

I'm Ash (or Umber, depending on where you know me from).

I'm a trans-masc queer artist that specializes in fantasy horror, portraiture, and silly tongue-in-cheek work with close to zero grey area in between.

A few of my favorite hobbies include fantasy role-playing games (both at a table, and on a screen), and writing - both of which I think lend themselves to my visual work.

I deeply enjoy storytelling, and the exploration of different worlds - so research plays a big part of what I create. I find inspiration in the natural world, in different mythologies, as well as my own lived experience and dreams.

RIP came from a marriage of my deep fascination with medicine, biology, and the things that make us imperfect in our mortality, and my love for portraiture. It's the things that make us fallible that make us most interesting, and beauty is skin deep.

    $250

Taryn Zust is a mixed media artist dabbling in drawing and sculpture. She enjoys exploring aspects of the monstrous, fantastic, or downright odd that exist between the lines of the everyday. Muted colors, masks, and shrouded figures frequently her work.

The primary focus within her work is empathy, inviting the viewer to engage with that which is peculiar or inhuman. It's through building connections to the Other that we may begin to better understand what makes us human, and further inspire introspection and curiosity relating to the unknown.

    Consumption of Thyself

    Graphite and Charcoal

    NFS

The intention of Consumption of Thyself was to create a body of work showing a chaotic mix of fantasy and interacting figures. Taking inspiration from the dark history paintings by Francisco Goya, this work allowed me to discover my love of drawing ghoulish characters and merging that with traditional materials. Charcoal, graphite, and ink contributed to the eeriness of the figures by adding depth and contrasting values, allowing the viewer to be attentive of the work from a distance. Overall, my work consists of many artistic forms such as realism, abstraction, and surrealism as that offer a smooth transition from the physical world to the world of fantasy

My Mom Says this Piece is Edgy

Cyanotype printed on watercolor paper collaged on wood

    $250

Originally trained as a scientist, my work is influenced by the melding of the scientific and psychospiritual realms. My art explores the themes of healing from past traumas and our connection with the Earth and cosmos, among others. I utilize cyanotypes, an early photographic method that leaves an imperfect impression of the object, which evokes the impermanence of memory. These symbolic objects are collaged together in the way that memory are stitched together in our attempt to make sense of the past and of who we are.

My paintings are a fusion of various artistic influences and philosophical concepts, all centered around the exploration of ambiguity within visual language. I aim to create a form of visual poetry that reflects the evolving nature of visual language over time and the beauty found within its historical conversions and distortions.

Visual distortion is applied to call attention to the contemporary disruption of meaning of historical artworks. In my artistic process, I draw parallels between linguistic conversions and the distortions that occur in digital images, such as pixelation, interlacing, and fragmentation. These digital anomalies are meant to reflect the distortion or misinterpretation of a translated language. Through my work, I seek to display the horror of misinterpretation of these historical artworks – such as historical paintings, films, and architecture – and because of this, I refer to these artworks as ghosts. By alluding to subject matter that is both familiar and obscured, I aim to provoke contemplation regarding the Western art and media's tendency to draw inspiration from bygone cultural epochs, essentially creating pastiches. This recurring pattern, which I describe as a "haunting," perpetuates the influence of these ghosts due to their once-profound formulas for aesthetic perfection and visual emotional tropes. It is my intention to delve into processes that embrace these haunting ghosts of our past, in doing so, shedding light on their enduring impact in our present day.

Operating in a Baroque-inspired aesthetic, my process involves distortion and montage. The process of distortion is an undercurrent throughout my work that manifests initially by the manipulation of digital images, and later through paint abstractions in large-scale oil paintings. The process of montage is a cinema-inspired technique that involves augmenting non sequitur images until they reach a surreal emotional space between representation and abstraction. The image is then taken out of the digital realm and brought forth into a physical oil painting. This conversion from digital to analog is critical to my work, as it once again reflects a translation of language and the surreal quality of the various misinterpretations that occur.

I see my work as both a rebellion and reconciliation. It is a conflicted exhortation for the chaotic and vitalic beauty that resides within us all. I find that surrealism is only one of a few modes of image-making that can counter the endless barrage of propaganda, advertisement, and all the many forms of conventional commercialized media. I believe this is because surrealism often offers a plurality of interpretation as a result of juxtapositions and contradictions. In the brushstrokes, colors, and layers of my work, I invite the viewer to embark on their own surreal journey with the haunted past, to explore the untamed territories of their imagination, and to revel in the beauty of chaos.

I’m pretty bad at writing about myself but if I had to I would say that I don’t really consider my art dark, necessarily. I look at it as me taking all the creative skills I’ve worked for over the years to make the wisps of smoke that manifest in my mind, tangible somehow. My “goal” is to take these wisps of an idea and give them form, so that everyone else can see it too. So that I’m not alone in seeing these things, if that makes sense. Do dark subjects appear to me more often than not? Perhaps. What does that say about me? I rather not know.

When is my body preserved and enshrined? When is it cast off and discarded? Which parts are venerated like holy objects? Which parts are merely sacrificial?

This piece is from BODY GARBAGE, a series of sculptures inspired by historical reliquaries.
